Description In this thangka, Black Mahakala stands on Ganapati’s body, looks angry, and is covered in snakes and circled by fire flames that represent pure awareness. He sports a crown with five skulls and a garland of severed heads. These represent the five poisons of delusion—lust, hatred, ignorance, pride, and jealousy—turned into the knowledge of the five Buddhas. Having a kartri in his right-hand shows that he has cut off pride, clinging, and attachment. In his left hand, he holds a kapala that is full of blood, which represents the defeat of evil. The two hands in the middle hold a damaru drum and a lasso. The two hands on top hold a spear and a mala made of human skulls.
