Description The Thangka showcases the traditional Tibetan style, with Mahakala’s six unique ritual instruments representing his ability to combat malevolent energies. People revere it as a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the compassionate bodhisattva, and its ability to protect the Dharma and its practitioners from harm. The Six-Armed Mahakala, also known as Gon-po Chag-druk in Tibetan, is a defender and manifestation of Avalokiteshvara’s fury. All Tibetan Buddhist lineages associate her with contemplative activities and depict her in various capacities. In the Gelug school, Mahakala is associated with cultivating one’s mind in the vast scope of the Lamrim, one of the three scopes of an individual’s mental capacities. The term “Mahākāla” means “beyond time” or death and is often depicted wearing a crown with five skulls, symbolizing the transformation of adverse illnesses into wisdom. Mahakalas can also be white, have multiple heads, lack genitals, and wear various items and ornaments.
