Description Two armed Mahakala Barnag Chen is a significant figure in both Hinduism and Buddhism, particularly in the Kathmandu valley where he is prominently featured at Buddhist monasteries. Known as the guardian of Buddha Shakyamuni’s teachings, He is characterized in this thangka by a deep blue body, fierce appearance, serpent ornaments, a garland of severed heads, and a crown of five skulls symbolizing the five defilements. His right hand wields a Kartri to sever ego, while his left holds a kapala filled with blood, representing control over malevolent forces. Mahakala’s fierce demeanour is enhanced by his tiger skin attire and three eyes, which signify his understanding of time. He is a protector during conflicts, commanding spirits and providing sustenance to those in need. Mahakala is believed to be a manifestation of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, empowered by Buddha Amitabha to embody the wrathful qualities of all Buddhas, serving as the protector of Buddha fields.
