Description Tilopa (988-1069), an Indian brahmin, converted to asceticism as a child. He saw a dakini who offered him an explicit tantric initiation that connected him to the Void after a short time. He was told to discard his monk’s garb, act spontaneously, and practice in secret. This wandering yogi received teachings from numerous Siddhas. He abandoned his Brahmin status in Bengal for twelve years, making sesame oil by day and playing prostitute at night. Ilopa means sesame seed. Buddha Vajradhara appeared to him while meditating in a little grass hut. Via Tilopa, Vajradhara taught Mahamudra to the Kagyu.
