Description Düsum Khyenpa, the 1st Karmapa, founded the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. His name, meaning “Knower of the Three Times,” reflects his enlightened wisdom and profound understanding of reality. Born in Ratay, East Tibet, he received his first dharma teachings from his father and continued his education with various Buddhist teachers. He later moved to Central Tibet, where he dedicated twelve years to meditation and studying under renowned scholars. At the age of thirty, he received Kagyu teachings from Gampopa and further connected with the lineage through teachings from Rechungpa and other students of Milarepa. His deep spiritual practice allowed him to develop Siddhis, which enabled him to visit sacred sites in India, including Udhiyana, where Dakinis shared valuable wisdom. At forty-four, he returned to his home region in East Tibet, where he spent the next twenty-nine years establishing three monasteries, sharing Kagyu teachings, and training his students.
