Description Avalokiteshvara represents all compassion experienced by enlightened and seeking creatures. Buddhist mythology states that this form of Avalokiteshvara emerged after the four-armed form promised to spend his life guiding beings from delusion. His drive was so strong that he wanted his skull to explode if he wavered. As time went on, he saw how much ignorance overwhelmed people, and the immensity of the mission he had pledged to accomplish tempered his zeal. In response to his prayer, his head shattered into a thousand pieces. Buddha Amitabha resurrected him, gave him eleven new heads, and blessed a thousand fragments of Avalokiteshvara’s former head, which became eyes, hands, and legs out of compassion. These are his thousand arms, each with an eye on the palm center. Ten of his eleven heads are calm, indicating that he usually shows compassion through peaceful deeds, while one is wrathful, indicating that sometimes compassion is shown through force. The eyes on each hand reflect his immaculate clarity and wisdom, while his spread arms represent his desire to reach out to samsara beings.
