Its purpose is to destroy ignorance, which is the root cause of pain and endless existence. The book of transcendent knowledge, the Prajnaparamita sutra, is on top of the blue lotus in the left hand Manjushri is worshiped because it gives people control over the Dharma, and he is thought to be the father of Kathmandu. The Kathmandu valley used to be a lake where Vipaswi Buddha threw some lotus seeds. These seeds turned into a lotus flower with a thousand petals. The flower gave off five different lights, which stood for the five Buddhas. The light came to rest on the peak at Swayambhu after Manjushri cut through the valley walls with his sword of knowledge.
