Description White Tara is a female Buddha who represents the feminine aspect of enlightened activity and is one of the various forms of Tara. Her iconography conveys several hidden meanings: her white skin signifies purity, complete wisdom, and truth, reflecting the unchanging nature of reality, which remains unaffected by cyclical existence. A unique feature of White Tara is her seven eyes. She has the usual two eyes, along with an eye in the palm of each hand and one on the sole of each foot. A third eye on her forehead symbolizes her wisdom. These seven eyes represent her vigilant compassion, allowing her to perceive all suffering in the world with omniscient awareness. Her serene and youthful form embodies the timeless nature of enlightened consciousness, untouched by age, sickness, or death—the very challenges she helps her devotees to overcome. Typically, she is depicted sitting in a “royal ease” position, ready to assist all living beings. Her right hand is in the varada mudra, a gesture of granting boons, while her left hand, resting at her heart, holds the stem of a lotus flower that blooms near her left shoulder. This symbolizes purity and spiritual growth.
