Description The Thirty-Five Confession Buddhas, also known as the lha so long, are recognized from the Sutra of the Three Heaps, known in Sanskrit as Triskandhadharmasutra and in Tibetan as phung po gsum pa’i do. This Mahāyāna sutra outlines the practice of purification through confession and prostrations to these Buddhas and is a component of the broader Stack of Jewels Sutra. Tibet saw the emergence of two unique traditions of the Thirty-five Confession Buddhas, stemming from the two principal Indian schools of Mahāyāna Buddhism: one originating from the Madhyamaka school established by Nāgārjuna and the other from the Yogācāra school initiated by Asaṅga and Vasubandhu. Each institution created unique practices for bestowing Bodhisattva vows, integrating a visualization of the Thirty-five Buddhas and reciting the Triskandhadharmasutra confession.
