Description Tibetan astrology combines influences from Buddhist traditions like the Kalachakra Tantra, Hindu astrology of the Shiva Tantra, and ancient Chinese systems. The Tibetan calendar follows both the lunar and solar cycles. It matches its twelve lunar months to the months and days of the Western calendar, helping practitioners accurately track important dates and festivals. A Tibetan year has 12 or sometimes 13 lunar months, each starting and ending with a new moon. Every two or three years, an extra month is included to keep the calendar in sync with the solar year. Each year in the Tibetan calendar pairs one of twelve animals—like Rabbit, Dragon, or Horse—with one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Iron, or Water. These cycles guide astrological meanings and spiritual practices throughout the year. A fierce protective face appears in the swirling clouds at the top center, representing wrathful compassion that removes negativity and obstacles. This guardian oversees and protects the mandala’s sacred space. The top section displays sacred diagrams, seed syllables, and deity symbols in gold, inviting blessings, abundance, and spiritual power. These features are linked to wealth, protection, long life, and karmic purification, showing the thangka’s devotional and ritual significance. At the bottom, more circular mandalas and mantra-filled discs emphasize themes of protection and spiritual wholeness. Flowing clouds and water patterns symbolize energy in motion and the cleansing of mind and space.
