Description As the guardian deity, Begtse Chen, also known as Chamsing (translated as the Great Coat of Mail; in Sanskrit: Prana Atma), is commonly referred to as the red Mahakala. Begtse Chen, also known as the “Great Coat of Mail,” is a powerful Dharmapala in Tibetan Buddhism and a key protector of the Gelug school. Originally a Mongolian war deity, Begtse Chen was later integrated into Buddhism as a wrathful protector of the Dharma. Often referred to as the red Mahakala, he holds an important position within the Sakya tradition’s pantheon of Wisdom Deities. Over time, Begtse was adopted into the Gelug school, which gained popularity in Mongolia after the 17th century. While some Gelug traditions and regional monastic institutions view Begtse as a worldly protector, most artworks depicting him originate from a Gelug context, with many hailing from Mongolian sources.
