Description In this thangka, Maitreya Buddha is portrayed sitting on a lotus throne in the vitarka mudra, which signifies “teaching” and conveys compassion and wisdom. In his left hand, he carries a lotus stem or a vase, symbolizing purity and the nectar of immortality. Maitreya is adorned with a jeweled crown, earrings, necklaces, and silk garments, illustrating that he is a bodhisattva who has not yet fully renounced worldly possessions, unlike Shakyamuni Buddha. The lotus throne represents purity and enlightenment that emerges from the dirt of samsara. The background typically features hand-painted celestial flowers, clouds, and auspicious animals such as dragons. Artists have employed 24K gold paint for halos, ornaments, and outlined mantras, symbolizing holy light and heavenly energy. The golden glow also signifies the brilliant wisdom associated with enlightenment. Surrounding the Buddha are flowery vines and a mandorla (aura), representing spiritual energy and love that reaches out to all beings. At the bottom of the painting, there is a vase or bowl filled with diamonds and fruits, symbolizing gifts of abundance, purity, and dedication. This thangka is crafted by a Nepalese artisan who learned their skills in monasteries and paints everything by hand. The “Master Class brush strokes” consist of very fine lines, particularly noticeable in the face, the folds of the clothing, and the floral motifs.
