Description Deshin Shegpa, the fifth Karmapa, was born in the Nyang Dam region of southern Tibet in 1384. He declared himself the Karmapa and was officially recognized by Shamar Kacho Wangpo, who presented him with the Black Crown and other possessions of the fourth Karmapa. Deshin Shegpa taught the complete cycle of Kagyu teachings and traveled extensively, sharing his teachings in Tibet, Mongolia, and China. He was invited to the court of Emperor Tai Ming Chen, who later became one of his students. After several years, Deshin Shegpa returned to Tibet, where he constructed shrines and stupas, continued his teachings, and bestowed empowerments upon his students. He discovered Chopal Yeshe, the next Shamar reincarnation, and provided him with the Kagyu transmission. One of his students, Ratnabhadra, eventually became the next lineage holder.
